Question by JaceNess: How to properly bleach white shirts in the washing machine?
I’ve never bleached anything before and I would like to bleach my white shirts, do I need to use the bleach reservoir? do I just throw a half cup in when the hot water is filling up? or whats the best technique used… thanks for your input.
I’m bleaching the white shirts because I’ve had them for awhile and have faded over time… they lost their “whiteness” …I like these shirts and would rather bleach them then buy new ones.

Use hot water and bleach. Follow the directions on the bleach bottle for amounts. Hot water is a must though, when washing whites. Also… look on the label of the clothing item to make certain it is chlorine bleach safe. If it is not, use a bleach alternative. Let the water fill up, and mix the water and bleach before putting in the clothes. Mix well, as the bleach can “burn” your clothes… especially if there is any elastic. Bleach will slowly eat up elastic.

This chiffon sample was originally a blue gray color and then I soaked it in a solution of 1/2 bleach 1/2 water. This was obviously a bit strong for the delicate silk and did not render the effect I was hoping for. And also it fell apart mostly.

This is a sample of chiffon that was first dyed a blue-gray color and then put into a solution of 1/3 bleach 2/3 water. I was hoping that some areas would stay blue and others would be white but got this burned effect instead.
